Appaloosa

The non-moving camera in this made me SO happy. There's a gun battle near the end that's done entirely in about 3 medium shots, each one fairly long, including the final one where the protagonists are lying in the dirt, having both been shot, and the camera just holds & holds, until they start talking to each other & you realize they're not dead.

This is a truly ornery piece of filmmaking; it doesn't necessarily rise above its Eastwoodian antecedents, but it's so purely of a piece that I found myself growing to love it. All except for Ed Harris singing over the closing credits (I'm told that Clint himself sings over the closing credits in his new one, Gran Torino. WTF??).
