Acting was uniformly strong, and the screenplay was first-rate, albeit in the total standard biopic mode. As was the directing, for that matter. Not anywhere close to the best Van Sant movie I've ever seen; it doesn't take many chances. But as a classical biopic, it's about as well-made as it could possibly have been. Gus lets his actors take the chances instead, and I think it pays off.
