The Wrestler

Marisa Tomei contines to prove that she deserved that Oscar. Mickey Rourke acts valiantly out from behind the weird Eric Stoltz-like mask that has become his face; I wish I could see him in some alternate universe where he still had a normal human face.

Aronofsky seems to flourish under the constraints of the formulaic plot -- the strength & beauty of this movie are in a series of small set-pieces that accumulate, almost without you realizing it, into a real emotional heft by the end of the movie. This is a great piece of American filmmaking. Sadly, I remember thinking during the movie (and in retrospect I'm pretty sure I'm right) that Rourke totally deserves that Oscar & there's *no way* they'll give it to him.
